Why I Used Botox for Teeth Straightening

Everyone has little things about their appearance that really bothers them.  Things so small, most people may not even notice them. But you notice them. And they drive you crazy. Learn why Colleen Dolan, Owner & aesthetician at Denver Laser Solutions, uses Botox to straighten her teeth.

Botox for theeth straightening

I have always been self-conscious about my teeth. Growing up we could only afford braces for a limited time and while I was grateful that they helped kinda straighten my teeth, I was still not fully satisfied with the results.

Throughout the years I found ways to deal with my crooked teeth, which mostly consisted of not smiling for photos and covering my mouth when I laughed.  In my adult years, I toyed with the idea of getting veneers or braces again, but like most people, I try to avoid going to the dentist!

Being in this industry I am first to hear about new solutions and use cases for Botox, so when I discovered that using Botox for teeth straightening was a thing --- well, I didn't waste any time testing it out myself!  The results? Now I can smile without feeling self-conscious or having to worry about showing my “bad tooth side”.

But how did Botox actually "straighten" my teeth?

There are three muscles responsible for moving the upper lip:  the levator labii superioris alaeque nasi (LLSAN), the zygomaticus minor, and the levator labii superioris (LLS).

My teeth looked crooked mostly from my gum line, so I have what is called a “gummy smile”, meaning that when I smile my lip moves upwards to show a lot of my gums. I worked with my Denver Laser Solutions team to determine that I should target the LLSAN muscle, which is a long, thin muscle on either side of the nose.  Also known as the “Elvis muscle”, this muscle is responsible for moving the upper lip when we snarl or smile.

By using Botox here I could lower the appearance of my upper lip and give the appearance of straighter teeth. Only a small amount of Botox is needed to treat this area, usually about 3 units per side and treated in one visit. It takes roughly two weeks to see full results and lasts three to four months.

Now that is something to smile about!
