What's the best treatment for acne scarring?

We often get asked what is the best treatment for acne scarring.  At Denver Laser Solutions we have several different treatments that can improve the appearance of acne scars.  They are all effective in treating those stubborn ice pick or rolling acne scars, and regardless of which treatment you choose it is, unfortunately, an exercise in patience.

Multiple treatments are required, and it takes about 3 months to see full results. That being said, each treatment has their pros and cons, and there is no one “best” treatment.  It all depends on what is the most important to you. Dividing our treatments into different types of “bests”:

Best treatment for getting the quickest results:  Fractional Laser Treatment

Our fractional non-ablative laser pushes columns of heat into the skin, causing a small injury to the skin.  That stimulates your body’s natural healing process, creating new collagen in the area, evening out the peaks and valleys of the skin. Most of our patients are a little pink for 3-5 days and have some minor swelling for up to a week.  Because of the heat and inflammation involved, you will need the least amount of treatments (3-6 depending on the severity of the scars) compared to other methods.

Best treatment for little to no downtime: MicroNeedling

Dermal needling goes by many names: microneedling, collagen induction therapy, and even “the vampire facial”.  It has been gaining popularity over the past several years and for good reason- it gives great results with very little downtime. Most patients can expect 1-4 days of mild redness that can be covered pretty well with makeup (although make sure not to wear makeup in the first 12 hours following treatment).  There is often some mild flaking/dryness during the healing process, but can be easily remedied with some extra-hydrating moisturizers. Because this treatment has very little downtime, it does require more treatments (6-9 depending on severity).

Best treatment for getting the most bang for your buck:  TCA chemical Peel

TCA Peel is Trichloroacetic acid, and is the most aggressive chemical peel we offer.  It is one of the best treatments for those on a budget, and we get great results from it!  It works for both pigmented acne scars as well as texture. Although there is no medical downtime, there will be some social downtime.  Expect 7-10 days of peeling and you will need to avoid sun exposure, exfoliation, and picking or scratching during the healing process.

Overall Best Results: Combining different types of treatments

Having a multi-pronged approach to treating scarring will give you the best results, and has the highest satisfaction rate compared to sticking with just one type of treatment. TCA peels pair well with fractional laser or dermal needling because it temporarily thins the skin, allowing the laser or dermal needling machine to get a deeper, more aggressive treatment.
