Vitamin C + Benzoyl Peroxide
Vitamin C is one of the most powerful and also unstable antioxidants. It’s a delicate formulation, so you will notice that this article will show combinations with vitamin C that do not work together. For this one, benzoyl peroxide is an oxidizing agent, using it along with vitamin C which is an anti-oxidant compromises the efficacy of both causing them to cancle eathother out, ultimately neutralizing the benefits of both products.
The Solution: Use them at different times of the day.
Use vitamin C in the morning along with sunscreen to protect against both pollution and UVA rays. Use benzoyl peroxide at night to help combat existing acne breakouts while your skin is in repair mode.
Vitamin C + AHA’s
Layering vitamin C and alpha hydroxy acids or AHA’s can destabilize the formulation of vitamin C. AHA’s (glycolic, malic, lactic) can alter the PH level of vitamin C rendering it useless for penetrating the skin.
The Solution: Try Retinoids instead of AHA's
If you want an anti-aging ingredient along with your vitamin C then retinoids have got your back. Retinoids such as Reinin-A or Retinol-A offer similar benefits as alpha hydroxy acids without altering the PH level of vitamin C. Look for a serum containing vitamin A, (aka retinol-A) vitamin C and vitamin E. These three skincare ingredients work synergistically to provide great nutrition for the skin.
Vitamin C + Niacinamide
The last bad skincare combination containing vitamin C is with Niacinamide. Niacinamide is a powerful anti inflammatory that helps protect collagen, vitamin C is a anti-oxidant that also protects collagen. You would think these two skincare ingredients would be great together however, the reaction is that these two compounds when placed on the skin at the same time turn into niacin. which causes flushing and redness, ruining the integrity of both products.
The Solution: Use ferulic acid and vitamin C together.
If you love vitamin C in your skincare regimen, add something that will make it stronger. Ferulic Acid doubles the strength of any antioxidant it’s paired with giving you the wrongly theorized niacinamide.
