OTC: Obnoxiously Terribly Comedogenic!

By: Morgan Nolte L.E.

When your trusted esthetician recommends a regime for you it is not because of their sales quota or commission for the month. It is simply because we trust our products and can guarantee the results associated with them. Who doesn’t love results?! The right combination of products can dramatically improve skin conditions such as acne.

With that being said, many cleansers and moisturizers found Over The Counter contain tons of comedogenic ingredients...bleh! These components are the number one cause of acne breakouts and enlarged pores associated with product usage across all skin types.

What is “comedogenicity”?

When a product is defined as comedogenic this means that it WILL sit in and clog your pores. And we all know that clogged pores = acne and breakouts. No fun!

Avoid this potential reaction by reading your ingredients. The following is a list of proven comedogenic ingredients found on the market:

  • Acetylated Lanolin

  • Butyl Stearate

  • Lanolic Acid

  • Linseed Oil

  • Coal Tar

  • Cocoa Butter

  • Olive Oil

  • Squalene

  • Oleic Acid

  • Oleyl Alcohol

  • Isopropyl Isostearate, Linoleate, Myristate, Palmitate

  • Isostearic Acid

  • Myreth 3 Myristate

  • Myristyl Myristate

As skin care therapists, we hope to help every client of ours achieve their best skin. Carrying Image and Yon-Ka brand products allows us to do so. Both of these lines are guaranteed to improve skin texture, condition, and overall tone without causing congestion when used on a regular basis. Next time you plan to purchase skincare products, do your research! Or allow your trusted esthetician to do it for you.

All of our “treatment plans” created during consultations or your first experience with us are strictly based on your skin type (combination, oily, dry)  and current condition (redness, acne, premature aging, hyperpigmentation). Following that, we will educate you on each product recommended and how to use them. Both Yon-Ka and Image are fabulous for all skin types, however, the idea behind each line is significantly different.

Yon-Ka’s brand is catered towards healing of the skin while directly approaching specific issues. Essential oils, plant extracts and humectants help to bind moisture into the skin while controlling vascularity, congestion, swelling, hyperpigmentation and acne. This line is perfect for preventing early aging as well on top of using your sunscreen! In Colorado, using Yon-Ka to increase overall hydration while reducing skin conditions is your best bet. Products such as YonKa lotion PS will aid in bringing down any inflammation or redness as well as binding additional water to your skin.

Image Skincare is the line most often used following medical treatments in our office because of its tremendous post-treatment effects on redness and swelling. This line is great for targeting specific concerns such as redness, acne, balancing and anti-aging. Color coding across the line makes it easy for the client to know what condition is being treated. For example, their balancing collection, Image Ormedic, is packaged in green because most of the products contain green tea. Image is complemented throughout its products with loads of peptides, amino acids and vitamins A and C.

Each of our incredible skincare lines can be mixed and matched based on the client’s concerns. And the best part, results are guaranteed without the possibility of adverse reactions such as breakouts! After all, we want our skincare to make us look and feel better. Come see our trusted band of Skin Therapists at Denver Laser Solutions for the perfect product recommendations for you!
