Acne Prevention

By: Melissa Day

Dealing with acne is never fun, and only gets more frustrating with age. The longer your complexion remains problematic, the more desperate you might feel in a situation that feels akin to losing an uphill battle.

Here at Denver Laser Solutions we educate our downtown skincare clientele that developing a routine is essential for successfully battling problematic skin because prevention is just as important as dealing with forming blackheads, whiteheads, papules, and pustules. While a sudden break out might take you by surprise, you have to ask yourself if you were diligently following your skin care routine, because a multitude of things are likely affecting your skin. A sudden change in diet, use of certain medications, inconsistent use of skin care products, increased stress levels, an oncoming menstrual cycle, and excessively picking your face are a few factors that could be contributing to your complexion. You might not even see the effects of these factors for days, even weeks which is why being proactive about your skin care routine is essential. When new spots do form it is important that you do not pick at your skin, or try extracting pimples with your fingernails. This could lead to scarring and deeper infections, which may make your skin even worse. Consult with your esthetician to discuss which blemishes are ok to extract and when, as well as the proper tools necessary for success. Consistent prevention of new acne is just as important to your routine as correction and if you are aware of contributing factors that may be approaching in life then upping your daily routine will also help prevent disaster!

Taking your schedule into consideration and knowing your skin type are very important as this will help you know what products will benefit your skin and fit in with your daily and nightly routines. If you are guilty of skipping the dreaded face wash at night then try a waterless cleanser like Yon-ka’s Eau Micellaire, in a single wipe it gently captures impurities and removes make-up perfectly from the face, eyes and lips. No rinsing is required. If you're guilty of skipping the sunscreen, try finding a moisturizer that contains a broad-spectrum SPF so that you can at least have some sort of protection from the sun's rays. For those who dislike slathering cream sunscreen over their make up for reapplication, try a mineral sun block powder such as Color Science Sunforgettables SPF 30 which will absorb oils and leave a matte finish without ruining your make up. Experiment with products and find a blend of that addresses all of your concerns.

Prevention is essential with proper skin care, in the same way that getting in shape increases in difficulty as years pass, fighting aging or acneic skin only gets harder the more you neglect it. Treat your acneic skin with a combination of preventative and corrective skincare; balance your more aggressive facial cleansers containing glycolic and salicylic acids, with calming, soothing, and pH balancing products to avoid unnecessary irritation on the skin.  Not sure where to start? Schedule a complimentary consultation at Denver Laser Solutions with one of our skincare experts and start your road to clear skin today!
